Looking to escape the heat for a weekend without driving halfway across the country? The Catskills are calling - and they’re closer than you think. Just a 3–4 hour ride from the South Jersey/Philadelphia areas, this scenic slice of upstate New York is packed with adventure that’s perfect for the whole family, furry friends included.
Here’s our favorite family- and pet-friendly weekend itinerary, featuring easy hikes, cool rivers, and cozy towns that offer just the right mix of nature and comfort.

Basecamp: Phoenicia, NY
Nestled in the heart of the Catskills, Phoenicia is a small mountain town with a big personality. It’s got great local eats, unique shops, and plenty of options for Airbnbs, cabins, or rustic hotels. You’re also within arm’s reach of rivers, trails, and swimming holes.
Pro tip: book early in peak season (June–September), especially if you're bringing pets - many Airbnbs in the area are dog-friendly, but they fill up fast.
Easy Hikes with Big Payoff
1. Tanbark Trail (Phoenicia). A short but rewarding loop right off Main Street. It’s just under 2 miles, and while there's a bit of an uphill, it’s totally doable for kids and dogs. At the top? A lookout point with views that stretch for miles.
2. Giant Ledge (just outside of Phoenicia). If your crew is up for a little more challenge, Giant Ledge offers a 3.2-mile round-trip trail with multiple cliffside views perfect for a snack break. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the payoff is epic.
Splash Spots
1. Big Deep (Woodstock, NY). A favorite local swimming hole with calm, clear water. It’s shaded, it’s quiet, and it’s a short drive from Phoenicia. Pack a picnic and your Big Daddy Life tumbler—it’s the perfect spot to cool off.
2. Esopus Creek. Running right through town, the Esopus offers shallow spots where the kids (and pups) can splash, skip rocks, or even float in a tube. Just keep an eye on water levels if it’s been raining—it can pick up speed.
Bonus Fun: Tubing with Town Tinker
Want to turn things up a notch? Town Tinker Tube Rental in Phoenicia offers a laid-back float down the Esopus. It’s better for older kids or teens (and not dog-friendly), but definitely a fun way to spend an afternoon while the rest of the crew chills back at basecamp.
Gear Up & Go
Whether you're loading the car with snacks and swimsuits or packing light for a two-day breather, Big Daddy Life has the gear to match your weekend vibe. UPF 50+ Long-sleeve Shirts? Check. Tumblers with built-in Bluetooth speakers? Double check. Hats, bags, beanies - yep, we’ve got those too.
The Catskills offer the perfect blend of nature and convenience–especially for families looking to unplug without roughing it. With easy hikes, cool water, dog-friendly stays, and towns like Phoenicia just a short drive away, it’s the kind of trip you’ll want to make a tradition.
So pack the dog, grab the kids, load up the truck, and let the good times roll.
See you out there–Big Daddy style.
