How to Keep Your Fishing Gear in Top Shape During Off-Season

At Big Daddy Life, we know your fishing gear is more than just equipment - it's part of your passion, even during the colder months when it's on standby. So, we've created this simple guide to help you keep your gear in great condition, so you can be rest assured that it will ready for action when the weather starts to warm, the days grow longer, and the fish start biting again.

Out With The Old, Make Room For The New!

First things first, take some time to sort through your tackle. Look for rust, cracks, fraying or any other damage that can impede your performance. If you're unable to make the necessary repairs, it's time to toss them out. This way, you can prevent equipment failures and harm to yourself or the environment when it's time to cast your line again.

Clean 'Em Up!

Saltwater is highly corrosive to fishing gear, so hopefully you've been giving your equipment a wash after each outing. But if you've been strictly freshwater, a proper clean at the end of the season should suffice. Nonetheless, it's important for your gear to get a thorough clean before being put in storage.

For the rod blank, use mild dish soap and a damp towel and take a clean, dry towel to finish. As for the reel, you can use an old toothbrush and soap to remove any grime out of the nooks and crannies.

Gear Maintenance

It's highly recommended to apply a light oil to any moving parts of your fishing reel to extend its lifespan. This can reduce friction, ensure peak performance, and protect internal components from wear and corrosion.

Another thing to consider is loosening the drag on your reel to reduce tension during the off season. If you're storing your equipment for several months, you can even remove the the line altogether to avoid line memory.

Storage Upgrades

No one likes a warped or tangled fishing rod. We recommend storing your prized fishing poles either vertically, horizontally, or on the ceiling using a fishing rod rack. Mount your rack in an area that is dry and away from direct sunlight. For added protection, consider rod sleeves. To make things even easier, Big Daddy Life offers durable, American-made fishing rod racks in multiple colors and sizes to make storing, organizing, and protecting your rods a breeze. Check out our wide selection, here.

Baits, lures, and other tackle and tools should be stored in a similar cool, dry environment. They should be organized in a way that prevents tangling or exposure to moisture. It must be your lucky day, though! Big Daddy Life also offers PVC utility holder, with 10 slots for tools and 9 holes for hooks and lures. These are also available in multiple colors.
